Our last week in Kenya

Time flew by! We have been in Kenya for two months and leave on Monday. This past week we continued in our projects and building relationships. We were at the LCC for a few mornings. My time has been spent there lately helping the moms in the kitchen cutting up piles of veggies (green onion, carrots, squash, cabbage, tomatoes, etc.). Rainer was back to chopping wood and helped replace the ceiling in the kid’s dining hall.

At the K-branch this week in ‘art class’ we told them bible stories and had coloring pages for them to work on. The oldest class learned of Christ’s resurrection, the littlest ones heard Jesus’ story of the Good Samaritan, and the middle class was told of when John baptized Jesus. During outdoor playtime with the kids, Rainer has developed a game that is simply Rainer chasing them around the yard with a rubber hose piece. The kids run around screaming and laughing as Rainer gets to play monster… it’s really funny! The teacher was giggling the other day during the game and Rainer asked why, she said “the kids have named this game in Kikuyu ‘if you get caught, you get hit’”. The kids like it so much they bring Rainer the hose thing.

In the middle of the week we were back in Kibera for our last bible study with the Power Women Group. This week we told them the story of Job and what a faithful servant he was. We went around and discussed what our reactions might be if our whole life around us was taken, and also shared times in our lives when we must be patient and trust in the Lord. It was powerful to hear Maria share that she trusted in the Lord when she found out her HIV status and expected her family to die around her. But still today, they are all healthy. Rosemary praised God for how far their Women Art Shop has come. They used to do everything by hand, but now God has blessed them with 4 sewing machines. I almost cried as the women told us to choose something from their shop to take home and we hugged them all goodbye.

This is my little friend Margaret. She lives with her grandmother because she was orphaned when her parents died of AIDS.

I found the girls playing this homemade, very inventive, jacks game. Toss the rock in the air, hit the ground, catch the rock. You play until you drop one. Then your friend plays. Most rocks wins.

These three boys standing with teacher Lucy all have the exact same name. hehe

Mom Julia had a kid's jacket on her head to block the sun

This is Rainer's little friend Peter. He is shy and quiet, but very good at both school and in art. It seemed very out of his character, but really cute, when he put this mop on his head.

This is Stephen, but everyone calls him Grandpa... because he looks like a grandpa. Found out through his artwork that he is much slower than his classmates. The teachers think it's something to do with his HIV drugs.
